Pedaling for St. Pat’s 2014

Janine Hegeman

From all accounts, the ride went well. The start area (on Tejon Street from McCabes Tavern) had a fun and festive atmosphere. The start itself, heading south on Tejon Street, was to be timed with Challenging course riders leaving first, then Intermediate course riders, then the Family ride, but it was a bit chaotic with a traffic jam as 300+ riders turned off at the Monument Valley Trail entrance. The volunteer bicyclist sweeps on the three different courses had some trouble sorting out which rider was on what course at first, but there was good police support sweeping the course by motorcycle as well – all the riders were safe and there were no accidents.

The rest stops were well-stocked with snacks bike riders enjoy, and the volunteer’s colorful costumes and decorations added to the riders’ enjoyment of the ride. The course was well marked (with the exception of a few spots where a sign blew over or road markings couldn’t be seen due to the heavy volume of car traffic). And there was some congestion at the parade staging area, where the 5K runners and bike riders were both heading east on Cache la Poudre, with no lane separation. However, riders had a choice this year to move to a position in the parade closer to the front, cutting the wait time. Best of all, the wind held off until all the riders finished the parade and headed back to the ride start at McCabe’s Tavern.

As the saying goes, there’s always room for improvement. More discussion with John and Carol will take place in the near future. Potential route adjustments, course marshal positions, and suggestions for improvement will be topics. We look forward to 2015 as the year that this ride takes off, and really becomes John’s vision as the ride that “kicks off the Southern Colorado riding season”.

If you volunteered, THANK YOU! And if have any suggestions you’d like me to take to the meeting with the O’Donnells, please call or send me an email. 719-291-3814 . As the organizer for CSCC, I’ll do my best to make sure this partnership works well for both of or organizations.
